Katrina Wright braved a dramatic final: Bowling
To take out the prestigious Australian Indoor Championships in Tweed Heads last week, lawn bowler Katrina Wright braved a dramatic final.
In a close final that came down to a tie-break, the 29th-ranked Wright faced off against Merryland’s Arleen Jeffery.
Sealing the match at 8-7, 5-8, 2-1, and securing the win for the St Johns Park Bowling Club player, Jeffery was unable to draw Wright’s perfectly positioned shot.
Katrina Wright said, “It was pretty exciting to finally win the grand final. The other player is one of my mates, and I actually won in the NSW qualifier against her so I felt comfortable with the player. I had prepared for it and I was fortunate to come away with the win.”
For the former national representative, it was “third time’s a charm”. In 2008 and 2009, she fell short in her last two Australian Indoor finals appearances.
Alongside her St Johns Park Women’s Bowling Club teammates recently, Wright snagged another victory, when they regained their title of State Pennant champions with an impressive grand final win at Ettalong Bowling Club. After beating runners-up Raymond Terrace by half a point in a close-run game, the ladies took out the 2010 State Pennant crown, winning five of the seven games played.
St Johns Park is the fourth time in five years the club won the coveted title, after victories in 2005, 2006 and 2009 and it was the favorite going into the event.
Wright is gearing up to represent Australia at the next Indoor World Cup in Warilla in April and will take part in the State Triple Finals later this month.

Bowling – U.S. Bowlers aim to set new world record
What are you doing on Saturday, Aug. 7? If you’re a bowler, you’ll probably be helping to set a new world record.
More than 3,200 bowling centers across the United States will be teaming up that day to try and set a new, single-day record for most games played.
Dubbed National Bowling Day, the record-setting attempt will be the culmination of the 2010 National Bowling Week, which kicks off on July 31. In an attempt to help break the record, every center will offer the first game free, and bowlers can download a free game coupon at www.gobowling.com.
The event and week are sponsored by the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America, Strike Ten Entertainment (STE), the International Bowling Pro Shop and Instructors Association (IBPSIA), the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) and the United States Bowling Congress (USBC).
Bowlers across America will be attempting to break the current record of 741,821 bowling games played in a single day, which was set last year.
The Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America was established in 1932. It began as an attempt by a small group of bowling center owners revive their businesses and to bring together what was at the time a fragmented group of proprietors.
Saskatoon win streak snapped at Canadian Five-pin Bowling Championships
Saskatoon had a firm grip on the medals at the Canadian Open five-pin bowling championships for years. This trend has now come to an end.
After willing medals at this venue for six years, the women’s team only managed to take home a fourth place finish in this year’s event. They managed to place third in the round-robin tournament, but lost their match against Alberta in the stepladder match. The final pin count was 1,275 pins to 1, 106.
It is unclear why they struggled so much to beat Alberta. In their matches in the round-robin play they easily disposed Alberta’s squad.
The men’s team from online betting star team, Saskatoon, did not fare much better. They only managed to finish fourth in the round-robin play, and then they fell easily to British Columbia in the first round of the stepladder. The pin count of their match against British Columbia was 1,315 to 1,198 in favor of British Columbia.
It appears that the era of dominance for Saskatoon is over and the five-pin championships will be wide open for here on out.
Five-pin bowling is a sport that was invented in Canada in 1909 in response to complaints from bowlers. Ten pin bowling was seen as too strenuous, demanding too much strength from the participant. The pins and ball were shaved down to their current size to allow all to participate. The sport now holds tournaments in Canada to determine who the best players of the sport are. In recent history, the team from Saskatoon has had the most success.

Bowling- USBC Championship
The 2010 USBC Championship is under way in Reno, Nevada. As of Tuesday morning on May 27th, the scores are looking very high in these games.
Terrence Syring is leading the way over all bowlers with an average of nearly 278 pins per game. That is a very high average, but there are many bowlers that are close behind. One of the bowlers that is close behind is Earn Vollmar, a bowler from Toledo, Ohio.
Vollmar was absolutely on fire after a slow start to his day at the championship. Vollmar was off early, failing to score a strike or a spare in two of his first 3 frames. In response to his poor start, Vollmar made the decision to switch balls that he was using. After his switch the tides really turned for him. After making the ball change, Vollmar hammered home 28 straight strikes. This led him on his way to a 247 in game one and then he managed to bowl a perfect 300 in game two. His third round was no disappointment in itself, as he bowled a 264.
Vollmar isn’t the only bowler who has managed to bowl a perfect game here. Eight bowlers have scored perfect games. This includes the Vollmar, Barry Zimmerman, Ken Konczos, Duane Kilts, Rich K Robinson, Kenneth A Barton, Robert W Gotchall, and Cliff Gilliard.
To give a perspective on just how competitive these scores have been, we can examine the bowlers that are tied for 149th place, John M Bodish Jr. and Todd Swadinsky. These two bowlers are at the bottom the list, but have averaged 238 pins per game. Scores are high in Reno.
